Named for a massive ceiba tree which served as the town’s informal gathering place until it was cut down in 1917 to make room for the customs house, La Ceiba is the third largest city in Honduras and the largest on the northern coast. The Honduran government has declared La Ceiba to be “The Capital of Ecotourism.” This rather lofty title is attributed to its natural charms which include Pico Bonito, or ‘beautiful peak,’ which soars to almost 2,500 meters in height and is surrounded by a verdant rainforest complete with cascading waterfalls and spectacular landscapes. Here you will also find the Cangrejal River, ideal for white water rafting and canoeing.
La Ceiba is most celebrated for its spirited nightlife which fires up each Wednesday and reaches a frenzied pitch by Saturday night. A party can always be located in the Zona Viva, or lively zone, which is a strip of discos running parallel to the Caribbean Sea. The entire year is only a long rehearsal though for La Feria de San Isidro, the mother of all bashes that takes place each year in May.
